Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure where a new heart valve is inserted without removing the diseased valve. TAVR is an effective treatment option for patients with a severe heart condition such as aortic valve disease or aortic stenosis.

TAVR is an alternative for patients who previously had no options or would be considered too high risk for traditional open-heart surgery because of age, frailty, or other medical conditions such as lung disease or kidney disease. As shown in the PARTNER clinical trial, TAVR allows many patients to live longer and more comfortably than they would with standard medical treatment alone.

Through Temple's Aortic Valve Disease Program, our nationally recognized team provides extensive experience in performing TAVR as well as traditional, advanced, robotic, and other emerging investigational valve treatments.

What Happens During the TAVR Procedure?

A very small incision is made in the patient's leg. Then the surgeon guides a thin, flexible tube with the heart valve through that incision, into your artery and to the diseased valve. The replacement heart valve is expanded, pushing aside the old valve, and begins functioning right away. This leads to improved blood flow.

Often these procedures are performed while the patient is awake under mild sedation, helping to allow for a rapid recovery and early hospital discharge.

What to Expect After the Procedure

After the surgery, you will start to be able to move around. You can expect to go home within a couple of days and get back to doing the things you could not before.

Conditions Treated by TAVR

You may benefit from having TAVR if you have any of these conditions:

Specialized Team, Sophisticated Technology

Your team includes interventional cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons that works together to help determine whether TAVR is an appropriate option for you. We specialize in minimally invasive procedures such as TAVR, and are experienced at working with patients with high-risk conditions.

At Temple, we're home to one of the Philadelphia region’s most sophisticated surgical suites, providing the resources needed to perform the TAVR procedure.
