Venous Thromboembolism

Approximately one million people in the United States are affected by a condition called venous thromboembolism (VTE). VTE is a disorder that includes both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Although anyone can develop VTE, factors that increase your risk include: immobility, medications, smoking, genetic predisposition, an increased number of red blood cells (polycythemia), cancer, pregnancy, surgery and damage to blood vessel walls.
